About CIPB

Center for Data Mining and Bioinformatics (Serbian acronym CIPB) has been established as a research laboratory of the Department of Mathematics and Physics, Faculty of Agriculture, University of Belgrade, in which research in applying mathematics and computer science in biological and agricultural sciences is being conducted. CIPB functions as an organizational part of the Department of Mathematics and Physics, but researchers from other departments can join.

Following the ongoing rapid development of information technologies, several scientific disciplines that connect biological sciences with computer science have been developed. Some of them are computational biology, bioinformatics, biostatistics and others. There are a lot of research institutions and student programs in these fields in the world. Numerous projects from EU and UN (FAO) programs have application of IT in biological and agricultural sciences as a main topic, and there are some very important global initiatives for applying IT in agriculture, such as projects agInfra, AllBio, SemaGrow and OrganicDataNetwork from FP7 programme, initiative AIMS at FAO and many others.

CIPB is the first research center-laboratory in Serbia which connects and integrates researchers from different scientific areas into a unique research center for multidisciplinary research on applying mathematics and IT into biological and biotechnological sciences. Scientists at the Faculty of Agriculture have diverse fields of interest and they are familiar with multidisciplinary approach in research which is why our Faculty is the perfect place for the development of bioinformatics and related disciplines. CIPB gathers researchers from the Faculty, but it has also established collaboration with other institutions. More about the research team can be found here.
